La Loma Hills-Colton-Morning heat and Sub Sandwiches!

Distance: 1.27 Miles
Time: 33 minutes
Seasons: Winter, Fall, Spring, Summer (morning/evening)
Parking: Residential
What to Bring: Sunscreen, lots of water, and comfy shoes (hiking shoes are optional).

I am always nervous when I try a new trail. On the way to this one I said to my dogs, “I don’t know guys, this might be a bust.” Upon arrival I saw several no trespassing signs at the trailhead. I figured I would still walk around the neighborhood so I could try out the sub place that opened soon. As I walked down the street, I actually found three ways to hike up the trail with no signs. Up we went. Added bonus–I didn’t see anyone else on the trail.

There were more options to make the hike steeper and longer, but I kept it short because it was hot and as you may have guessed…I was hungry.

Where to Eat: SoCal Subs

I wanted to try a new place and found this when I was planning the hike. A great place for subs and everyone was there friendly. The sodas have a cute bears on them which was neat too. I got the C.B.A.–with chicken, bacon, and avocado. It was very tasty and filling! There are other sandwiches I can’t wait to try for my next visit!

Cal State-San Bernardino-Sunflowers and Tacos!

Distance: 2.02 Miles
Time: 51 minutes
Seasons: Winter, Fall, Spring, Summer (morning/evening)
Parking: Residential–you need to park in the neighborhood nearby where you do not see “No Parking” signs. I usually park north of Northpark Blvd and then turn right (north) on Campus Cir and the trail will be on the right hand side.
What to Bring: Sunscreen, lots of water, and comfy shoes (hiking shoes are optional).

I really enjoyed this hike. I went around 6:15pm and I only saw one group of people in the distance. The route has a nice contract of residential on one side and sunflowers and the hills on the other side. I could have extended the route, but I was eager to eat my tacos!

Where to Eat:  Tacos Unidos, San Bernardino

I found this place on Instagram and they do pop-up tacos on Friday nights. I got chicken tacos and one chicken mulita. It was delicious! Next time I go back I want to order extra mulitas to eat over the weekend!

Where to Start the Hike:
Here is the location of where the trail starts, but you need to park a few blocks away and walk to this.

Blair Park-San Bernardino-Chicken Salad Sandwich and Chai Tea

Distance: 2.67 Miles
Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes
Seasons: Winter
Parking: Residential
What to Bring: Sunscreen, lots of water, and comfy shoes (hiking shoes are optional).

I left the house! I have been way to comfortable “sheltering in place” at home. It was good to get outside with the dogs. I’ve done this hike before, but this time I did not take the steep route that you see to the left when you start the trail. Instead, I went straight where the trail meanders to the antennas. My goal was to take the route behind the antennas that lead to Shandon Hills Middle School but it was already pretty warm when we got to the top so we came back down. More people at the top, but I saw very few people on the trail I took. This area is really neat because there are trails that split off in different directions.  Most people were wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

Where to Eat: The Green Shack Market and Viva La Boba

The Green Shack is a fun place because they not only have tasty food, but they have other services, such as printing, taxes, and notary. I always get the chicken salad sandwich on squaw bread. After picking up my sandwich, I headed to downtown San Bernardino for a chai latte and a lemonade/jamaica slushy (I was thirsty!) from Viva La Boba.  Both places have great customer service and excellent food and beverages.

Box Springs-Riverside Hiking with Wildflowers and Sub Sandwiches

This hike was pretty cool. Even though there were other people on the Two Trees trail and the trail that goes to the “M,” we had this trail all to ourselves. An additional surprise were all of the beautiful wildflowers blooming.

Where to Eat: The Sub Station

Very tasty subs! A lot of variety. I got the ham and cheese and my friends got The Big Dude and the Pastrami. Perfect for post-hike hunger!

Shandin Hills-San Bernardino Hiking after Bagels!

Distance: 1 Mile
Time: 1 hour
Seasons: Winter
Parking: Residential
What to Bring: Sunscreen, water, and hiking shoes for the steep areas.

Fun hike, but very steep at first. There was a bit of scrambling to find the main trail. If you veer to left onto the street there is a more paved trail, although it is steep too. Hard going up, but easy going down. Nice green, rolling hills and nice views. We parked at the end of the street and took the first trail we saw.

Where to Eat: AJ’s Bagels

Delicious muffins, bagels, and chips. The staff were very welcoming. Fun place to fuel up before or after a hike!

Blair Park-San Bernardino Hiking and Burritos

Distance: 2.3 Miles
Time: 1 hour
Seasons: Winter
Parking: Residential
What to Bring: Sunscreen, water, and comfy shoes (hiking shoes are optional).

I went to Blair Park a lot as a kid so it was neat to find a trail that I have been to before. You can hike this trail from the actual park, but this a trail nearby that also goes up to the antennas and beyond. I just went up  to the antennas and then came back around to do a loop. I started with the first trail on the left and it’s a bit steeper but if you straight it ends up at the same place but is less steep.

Where to Eat: Rosa Maria’s
I have been going here for years. I usually get the garbage burrito and a root beer, but everything on the menu is amazing.

Jurupa Valley-Post Rain Hike with Breakfast Burritos

Distance:  1.96 Miles
Time: 1 hour
Seasons: Winter
Parking: Residential
What to Bring: Sunscreen, water, and hiking shoes for the steep spots.

I really like hiking in this area. It was right after a storm so the views were great and lots of poofy clouds. There are many trailheads and you can go in several directions. I started hiking to the right and went to the top of the hill. I made the mistake of taking the steep trail down and was sore for several days. Not a lot of people on the trail either.  This place has become one of my new favorites!

Where to Eat: Joyce Burger and Rice

Tasty breakfast burritos and friendly staff.

Mt. Rubidoux-Dog Park Trail

Distance: 3 Miles
Time: 1.25 hours
Seasons: Winter
Parking: Carlson Dog Park 4727 Scout Ln, Riverside, CA 92501
What to Bring: Sunscreen and water.

I call this trail “Mt. Rubidoux-Dog Park Trail” because the trail starts at the end of the parking lot by the Carlson Dog Park. If you hike the main trail at Mt. Rubidoux there are a lot of people. But if you take the trail from the other side, there are few people on the trail and it will connect to the main trail. For this I took the trail and then hiked the main trail to the top and then came back down.

Where to Eat: TBD

The ‘M’ Hike

Distance: 4.80 Miles
Time: 2-3 hours
Seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring
Parking: Dirt lot. At the time of the hike, we did not pay, but always check the signs and bulletin boards.
What to Bring: Sunscreen and water.

This is fun hike to do in the winter when everything is green and the weather is cool.  The summer months are too hot unless you start early in the morning. We took the trail to the left of the dirt road which is more steep and then took the main road back as one big loop. You can also see burros as you drive up to the parking lot!

Where to Eat:

Burger Boss

Miguel’s Jr

In-N-Out

Jurupa Valley-Off of Valley Blvd

Distance: 1 Mile
Time: 40 minutes
Seasons: Winter
Parking: Residential
What to Bring: Sunscreen, water, and hiking shoes for the steep spots that get slippery.

This trail is pretty cool. There are many mini-trails that go in different directions. I only saw a few other people on the trail.  So far, I have tried two of the trailheads. For this trail, I took the less steep paths to the flag and back down.

Where to Eat: Joyce Burger and Rice This place has tasty breakfast burritos and the staff were super friendly.
